"Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose."
—Zora Neale Huston
Our students are heavily involved in their PACE projects. Students have completed their background research and have written the introduction for their paper. January, February, and March will be spent completing the experiment and science lab report, the power point presentation, and the final written paper. Students will present to a panel of judges on March 15, 2012. Students should wear business interview clothing for their presentations. (for more information, see the attachment on "Dressing for Success.") The following information provided by our district may answer questions about this project:
DISTRICT INFORMATION
An exciting part of 8th grade is a cross-curricular project between Science 8 and English 8. For Science PACE 8, students will do the following:
Identify a problem or question, of interest to you, that can be investigated scientifically
o Topics of study are teacher-approved
Complete background (library) research about the problem or question to find out what is already known
Formulate a hypothesis based on your background research and design an experiment that tests the hypothesis
Test the hypothesis by completing the actual experiment
Record the Problem Statement, Hypothesis (purpose), Experimental Design (methods), Data, Analysis and Conclusions using the Nature of Science Template
Synthesize lab notes from the Nature of Science Template and background research into a formal research paper
Give a formal oral presentation in front of a trained panel
o Supported by visual aid
