Special Services: Least Restrictive Environment |
Students served under IDEA have the right to an education in the setting that least restricts a student's ability to interact with non-disabled peers, and, if at all possible, to be educated in the child's neighborhood school. (Reg. 300.550) Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) requires public schools to provide students with disabilities the opportunity to participate as fully as possible in school and school activities with classmates who are not disabled. The IDEA clearly outlines that the removal of a student from the regular classroom into special or separate classes can only occur when satisfactory educational gains cannot be made, even with the use of supplementary aids and services.
