Special Services: The Assessment Process |
|
|
Eligibility for services under IDEA is determined individually for each student by a fair and full assessment process conducted by an evaluation team and only with informed parental consent. (Reg. 300. 532) An evaluation team at your child's school will select the appropriate qualified personnel to determine your child's unique needs. You, the parent, are a member of this team. Other team members may consist of the following professionals: - General education classroom teacher
- Special education teacher
- School psychologist
- A representative of the school district
- Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP)
- Physical Therapist (PT)
- Occupational Therapist (OT)
- Vision Specialist
- Paraprofessionals
The assessment will be provided at no cost to you. It will include a variety of assessment tools and strategies designed to gather relevant functional and developmental information and will include information that you provide. Information related to enabling your child to be involved and progress in the general education curriculum will also be gathered. The assessment may include the use of standardized or norm-referenced tests that are designed to compare your child's abilities against the average performance of children the same age whose development follows typical patterns. Two main types of tests may be used: - A standardized intelligence test to determine an intelligence quotient (IQ score)
- A developmental scale designed to compare your child's progress in the areas of academic skills, motor skills, communication skills, social skills, adaptive reasoning skills and self-help skills.
In addition to formal testing, the Joint School District #2 Special Services staff may also gather information from a variety of sources to appropriately plan the intervention program for your child. The methods used may consist of the following: - Other testing
- Observations
- Checklists
- Parent interviews
- Functional Behavior Analyses
REMEMBER: The assessment process is individualized to your child's unique needs and only the procedures necessary for gathering information about your child will be implemented. No testing procedures will be implemented without parental consent.
