There are many illnesses that are common to childhood. Here you will find information on some of the more common ones we see in school, as well as some further information on Joint School District #2 procedures and nurse recommendations.
Many parents are concerned about inclement weather and if their child should go outside. Read this letter from Dr. Fender regarding the benefits of being outside, even in inclement weather.
The district also has guidelines on being outside when the air quality is poor, CLICK HERE to find out more. You can go to the Air Quality website to see what the level is today.
Illness prevention is key, the number one thing anyone can do to protect themselves and others is by following good hand-washing techniques. The next would be to cough or sneeze into your clothing, this will trap the germs rather than spreading them. Another good way to prevent the spread of contagions, is not sharing personal items, utensils, food or drink.
Common Illnesses Seen at School:
CANKER SORE is a small ulcer inside your mouth. The specific cause is unknown and they are not contagious. They usually heal on their own without medical treatment. Try a salt water swish to ease the pain caused by a canker sore.
CHICKENPOX is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It causes an itchy rash and red spots or blisters all over the body. A person is contagious from 2-3 days before the rash appears until every blister has crusted over. Student may return to school once every "pox" has crusted over.
FIFTH DISEASE a viral illness, with a very distinctive type rash, often called "slapped cheek disease." You are contagious before the rash ever appears. Student may attend school as long as they are fever free(<100 degrees Fahrenheit).
HEAD LICE are tiny insects that live on the human body, typically found in the hair. They spread by close contact or sharing clothing or personal items like hats/brushes. A louse cannot jump or fly. Every nit must be removed to stop re-infestation. Student may return to school once treatment has been started.
