Pandemic Flu
Page 2

A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. A flu pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges for which people have little or no immunity, and for which there is no vaccine. The disease spreads easily person-to-person, causes serious illness, and can sweep across the country and around the world in a very short time. All community organizations, including school districts, businesses, government offices and churches have been instructed to prepare plans for a possible pandemic flu outbreak.

Key components of this planning are:

  • Individual and family preparedness is as vital as community preparedness.
  • Preparedness, response, and recovery are a shared community responsibility.
  • Partnership is vital.
  • Pre-planning and preparedness may limit:
    • Economic impact
    • Illness
    • Death
  • Education and communication are critical.

The Meridian School District is in the process of completing a comprehensive Pandemic Flu Response Plan. This plan is being developed with local, state and federal recommendations and in coordination with the Central District Health Department (http://www.cdhd.idaho.gov/).

Over the next few months, schools will be sending out information and resources to assist in the education of our families and community regarding pandemic flu. As stated above, individual and family preparedness is critical.
