Schools of Choice

Providing school and program choice to expand educational opportunities for the students we serve

Information for Families

What is a School of Choice?

Schools of Choice offer programs designed around a unique instructional approach, area of emphasis, student population, and/or school calendar. For example, Joint School District #2 offers arts-based, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), literacy, and world language elementary school choices.  Four schools, Chaparral, Spalding, Seven Oaks, and Pioneer, also have a modified calendar (year round).  Middle Schools continue elementary programs based on the feeder system.  The one exception is that there is not a modified calendar middle school.

At the high school level, professional technical programs are offered at the Meridian Professional Technical Center and at the Ada Professional Technical Center.  Renaissance High School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) accredited School of Choice which began offering the prestigious IB Diploma Program in 2010.  Renaissance also offers an Associate's of Arts Degree via a concurrent credit program associated with ISU.

See program links to the left (ex, Arts based Schools or STEM Schools) for boundary descriptions and school web sites for additional information.

Modified Calendar and Self Contained Gifted
Please go to specific school sites for information on applying for other modified calendar schools not having a thematic focus (Chaparral and Seven Oaks).

Please go to the "Self Contained Gifted Program" link for information on schools offering these programs.  Due to the nature of gifted testing and qualification practices, these programs have a different application process and timeline.

Lottery and Placement Process - all Schools of Choice

Elementary Schools of Choice: Apply between January 7 and January 24, 2014

Renaissance High School: Apply between January 7 and February 7, 2014

Applicants will be able to apply entirely online for the 2014 - 2015 school year.  On January 7, the application link will be available here and on the district's home page.  A paper application will also be available on January 7, both posted here and in hard copy at any School of Choice and the District Service Center.

Applications must be completed by the due date specified above in order to be considered on time.  If more students apply than seats are available at any School of Choice in any grade level, then students will be selected by random lottery. Lotteries are held throughout late January and early February (see the 2014 - 2015 schedule below). The order in which lotteries are drawn is randomly selected and changes yearly.  Applicants should be aware that they can only be drawn for ONE lottery.  Once an applicant is drawn in a lottery, they are removed from any lotteries that are to follow. Applicants will be notified by letter of the results of the lottery in mid February.

Preference is given in lottery draws to students living within the district's attendance boundaries who also have a currently attending sibling (who will continue to attend in 2014-2015).   From there, preference is given to primary boundary students (those without currently attending siblings), other students from our district, and finally students from other districts (ex, Kuna or Boise Schools).  Due to the preferences provided in lottery draws, all applicants who are offered a seat at a School of Choice MUST provide proof of residency (ex, a copy of a current utility bill with the customer's name and service address clearly visible, a copy of a home purchase agreement, or a copy of a home rental agreement) before they will be enrolled.  A description of each school's primary boundary is provided under the program links to the left.

Important: the order of preference outlined above is for ON-TIME applicants - those whose applications are received on or before the due date.  All late applications (regardless of boundary area or sibling status) will be considered after on-time applications and in the order in which they are received.
