Providing family choice to expand educational opportunities for the students we serve

Information for Families
What is a magnet school?
A magnet school is a school of choice, or a school within a school, designed around a unique instructional approach, area of emphasis, student population - even the school calendar. For example, the Meridian Joint School District offers art-based, math and science, math and technology, literacy and world language elementary school magnet choices. Four schools, Chaparral, Spalding, Seven Oaks and Pioneer have a single-track year-round calendar. Middle schools continue elementary magnet programs based on the feeder system. The one exception is that there is not a year-round calendar middle school.
Following is information on the variety of magnet schools the Meridian Joint School District currently offers and the elementary, middle and high school levels.
At the high school level, professional technical magnet programs are offered at the Meridian Professional Technical Center and at Renaissance High School. Renaissance High School's academic magnet program opens in Fall 2009. This program includes three academic focus areas: law and leadership, international studies and research and medical sciences. Currently, Renaissance High School is a candidate for the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.
