PLEASE, CONSIDER YOURSELF FORMALLY INTRODUCED TO YOUR TEACHER… HERE HE IS, Mr. Stephen Wingett!

An autobiography of Mr. Wingett

I am a veteran educator of some thirty two years. My entire teaching career has been in the Idaho public school system. I am a big man, with a big heart, and an even BIGGER sense of humor! I love to teach, to educate, to inform, and yes.........to have fun!!

Elements of all parts of my personality and who I am are evident (if you read between the lines that is) in the information and assignments that make up the course you are about to take. As far as being qualified to teach, please consider the following information as evidence that proves I AM QUALIFIED! In my youth....I grew up.

While I was growing up in Walnut Creek California, Salt Lake City, Utah, and mostly in Boise, Idaho (where I now reside), I decided that I wanted to be a teacher. After graduating from Borah High School in 1970, I went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boise State University. My degree was in History, with a minor in English. The summer of my graduation from college, I married a Boise, Idaho native. Her name was Rebecca Jackson, eldest daughter of a retired major league baseball pitcher named Larry Jackson. He ran for the Idaho governorship in 1978 and I thought I might get a job in "politics". But alas.......he did not win so, I stayed a teacher!!

In the next seven years we had four children; twin daughters, another daughter, and a son. I now have five grandchildren that my twin daughters have given to me. I started my teaching career in my minor field of study (English) at Middleton Junior High School, in the little town of Middleton, Idaho. After one year I moved to the Meridian School District. That was 1976. Our district had one high school then. It has eight today! Four "traditional" high schools, two "alternative" high schools and two charter high schools. The Boise/Meridian area, according to Rand-McNally, is the third fastest growing community in America!! Do you know what number one and two are? (hint: number one has vice and number two has sin)

For the past sixteen years I have taught history at Centennial High School. In 1985 I earned a Masters' Degree in Curriculum and Development from Boise State University. The emphasis of my project was in geography and culture. Because of my interest in the "world", so to speak, I have traveled five times to Europe on student educational tours. This traveling gave me an interest in world and geographical studies. When the Meridian School District decided it was time to create a new required course about the world, I jumped at the opportunity to participate. "They" only had a title, for this brand new required course for high school graduation. It was called, GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES, so......Mike Corbett, Jeff Hoseley and myself wrote the darn thing!!

This is now the fourth year of its existence and it was re-written in the summer (2001) and also updated in the summer of 2002 and the spring of 2003 so it would be more in line with the Meridian School Districts new “concept based” curriculum. It has also gone through another revision, during the summer of 2004, so it could reside in a more user friendly way, on the Meridian School Districts server. There was another update during the summer of 2005, mostly to fix dead links and streamline the submitting assignments portion of the course. The same thing is going to occur this summer also! By the fall of 2007 some of the lessons will be completely redone and improved upon. By offering GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES, "on-line", I get to teach a subject matter that I "love" in two very different ways. Wow! What a lucky guy I am!!

NOTE: If any of you are interested, there is one other course offered on-line through the Meridian School District. It is Geometry.

TEACHER to STUDENT Communication

I will be emailing the whole class with specific information as needed through distribution emails. The main way I will communicate with you, as a whole class, is through the announcement section at the top of the home page. I will email you individually with your grades after you complete each unit of the class. I will often email you individually when needed concerning individual assignments. You can also meet with me in person at Centennial High School during normal school hours. Please email me so we can make and appointment.

STUDENT to STUDENT Communication

A very important part of this course is being able to communicate with your fellow classmates. Several of the lessons require you to do this. You will need to go to the Class Email section, found at the bottom of this page, for these lessons. When you get to those lessons, you will be referred back to this page and/or a link to the Class Email Page will be provided for you.

Class Emails:

Here are the email addresses of your fellow classmates. There are six of you taking the course this summer.

(these will be posted when it becomes necessary)

You are to use this list, as needed, to communicate to your fellow classmates concerning the assignments that require you to "team up" with someone. If your email is typed onto this page incorrectly, make sure and email me right away so that I can correct it. Thank you.......MR.
